On January 3, 2020, Professor Chen Pan of School of Materials Science, Beijing Institute of Technology was invited to visit school of Biology and deliver a report entitled "History of Crystal Structure Analysis of Cellulose".
Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in the world and is an important part of plant tissue structure.
The analysis of its crystal and physical structure takes more than 100 years and involves the use and development of many advanced characterization methods.
This report will provide an overview of X-ray and neutron diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, transmission electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulation. It will also provide an overview of the key role of these methods in understanding the structure of cellulose, as well as a brief overview of the frontiers of cellulose structure.
Chen Pan's lecture was very touching. After the lecture, the students asked a lot of questions and the atmosphere was lively.
