On July 11-16,2010, MACRO2010: 43rd IUPAC World Polymer Congress, sponsored by IUPAC: the Pure and Applied Macromolecular Chemistry Group (Macro Group UK), was held in Glasgow, UK. Subsidizedf by International Academic Exchange Fund of HUST, PhD.candidate Fu Lina and undergraduate Zhang Yue from professor Yang Guang’ team of Huazhong University of Sci & Tech were invited to participate in the conference.
Opening ceremony of MACRO2010: chairman of the conference, professor Peter Lovell from University of Manchester
The 43th IUPAC Global Polymer Conference: Macromolecules 2010 Conference, is a biennial event of IUPAC Polymer. After several years of development, it has become the biggest internatinal comprehensive conference in Polymer Science and Engineering fields. There were more than 600 abstracts of 28 branch venues , and nearly 2000 scientists, researchers and exhibitors from many countries and regions in this conference. Besides, 8 themes were covered:
1. Delivering New Polymers for Service in Society: Advances in Polymer Chemistry
2. Molecular to Macroscopic Behaviour of Polymers
3. Sustainability: Renewable Resources and Environmentally-Friendly Polymers
4. Polymers in Support of Life
5. Functional Polymers for Electronics, Energy and Analysis
6. Polymer Science in Everyday Life
7. Advances in Colloidal and Nanosize Polymer Materials
8. Young Polymer Scientists: Contributions, Nurturing and Networking
At the opening ceremony, there were 4 rewards been announced, including: 1) IUPAC-Samsung Young Polymer Scientist Award; 2) DSM Performance Materials Award (with the cooperation of IUPAC); 3) Macro Group UK Awards; 4) Second IUPAC - Polymer International Award for Creativity in Applied Polymer Science or Polymer Technology.
Later, the winner of DSM bonus (50,000 Euro), professor Han Meijer from The Eindhoven University of Technology in Dutch , gave the first report of “Mechanical Performance of Polymers”. professor Han Meije’s report is also one of the 8 plenary lectures, and the remaining are: 1) Mr Sebastian Conran from Royal College of Art in UK;2) Professor Kiyohito Koyama from Yamagata university in Japan; 3) Professor Jean M.J. Fréchet from UC Berkeley in USA; 4) professor UC Berkeley from École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris in France; 5) professor Laura Kiessling from University of Wisconsin-Madison in USA; 6) academician Jiang Ming from Fudan University in China; 7) Professor Sir Richard Friend from University of Cambridge in UK.
Polymers for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is one of the 4 branch venues about the theme of Polymers in Support of Life. Professor Molly Stevens from Imperial College is the first keynote speaker of A1 branch venue, and her report is “New Materials based Strategies for Regenerative Medicine”. She is also the winner of Second IUPAC - Polymer International Award for Creativity in Applied Polymer Science or Polymer Technology.
PhD.candidate Fu Lina gave her Poster Presentation of “Bio-fabrication and Evaluation of Nano-cellulose Artificial Skin” in A1 branch venue, and ndergraduate Zhang Yue gave her Poster Presentation of “In situ Ordered Nano-assembly of Cellulose Fibers / Polyaniline” in G21 branch venue.
